In this workshop, Yohichi will be sharing with us his process in creating animation background paintings. He will be sharing with us the training method used in Studio Ghibli to prepare painters for production. This is a very hands-on, 2 day workshop where the students are given specific assignments to paint in class after the live demos. This is a great workshop for both new and repeating students who wish to learn how these incredible background paintings are created at Studio Ghibli.

TIME:
Saturday & Sunday, 2:00PM - 7:00PM (5 Hours)

DATE: July 13th & 14th, 2024 

DURATION: 2 Days

PREREQUISITE: Previous painting experience recommended

MATERIALS: Notebook to take notes. Students will need to bring some painting materials such as a board to paint on, small water bucket, & paper towels (material list will be sent before workshop). 

Specially ordered import paper, poster paint and brushes matching to Studio Ghibli’s production used art supplies are included in the workshop tuition. 

Limited to 30 students for the in person, hands-on painting training session.

 

INSTRUCTOR:  Yohichi Nishikawa is a Background Painter from Studio Ghibli and an Art Director at Studio Chizu. Yohichi painted environments for many memorable scenes from “Howl’s Moving Castle”, “Tales From Earthsea”, “Ponyo”, “The Secret World of Arrietty”, “From Up on Poppy Hill”, “Wind Rises”, “When Marnie Was There”, “Sword of the Stranger”, “Summer Wars”, “Wolf Children”, “Boy and The Beast”, “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” and most recently, “The Boy and the Heron”.
